The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.
Australia's selection chief the selector has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the forthcoming Ashes series.
Rumors had circulated that the veteran bowler might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Previous updates from the squad suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in the WACA.
He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of being involved.
"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not just his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.
"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. Hopefully it's the first Test. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."
Previous Setbacks
The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.
He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in multiple past seasons forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the contest.
He mentioned that it was unclear if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.
The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a precautionary measure because of soreness in his side.
The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."
"We put so much time has gone into building out the plan for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.
"He was only going to play the starting games in any case. His aggressive style the willow in shorter formats, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
