Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and close to the frontier with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves especially affected by weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
